FAQ

Explore our FAQ section to find answers to common queries. This resource provides quick, reliable guidance for your most frequent questions.

Do I need a visa to travel to Tanzania?
Yes. You can apply for a tourist visa online through the official Tanzanian government website. This visa also allows travel to Zanzibar. However, since early 2024, Zanzibar requires a special health insurance that must be purchased upon arrival at the airport for $44 per person.
Is it safe to travel to Tanzania?

Yes. Tanzania has been one of the safest countries in East Africa for many years. It is known for its stability and peaceful atmosphere. Many different ethnic groups live together in harmony, and tourists are warmly welcomed throughout the country, especially in well-visited areas like safaris and Zanzibar.

What vaccinations do I need for Tanzania?

Yes, vaccinations are recommended. For the most accurate and personal advice, please consult your own doctor or travel clinic. At Sarafika Tours, we do not provide medical advice or make health decisions for travelers. Your doctor can recommend the necessary vaccinations based on your health and travel plans.

What currency is used in Tanzania?

The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). US dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas.

Can I use credit cards in Tanzania?
Credit cards are accepted in hotels and lodges, but cash is recommended for small shops and local areas.
Will I have internet and phone signal?

Yes. You will be reachable in most areas, even in parts of the Serengeti. Many lodges offer Wi-Fi, and mobile coverage is widely available. If you would like a local SIM card for your safari, please inform your guide, and we’ll do our best to arrange one for you.

How much luggage can I bring on a safari?

Yes, you can bring luggage. If you’re traveling in a safari car with a small group, luggage is usually not a problem. For larger groups in one vehicle, or if you’re doing a fly-in fly-out safari to the Serengeti, please contact us in advance so we can make proper arrangements.

Electric Sockets in Tanzania

When traveling to Tanzania, you’ll encounter two main types of electrical sockets:

Type G: The most common plug, especially in modern buildings and tourist accommodations. It features three flat, rectangular pins arranged in a triangle and is the same type used in the United Kingdom.

Type D: Found primarily in older buildings and less touristy areas, Type D has three round pins arranged in a triangular pattern but is less prevalent than Type G.

What Travelers Need to Know:

Adapters: Bring a travel adapter compatible with both Type G and Type D plugs to ensure you can charge your devices wherever you go.

Voltage: Tanzania operates at 230V and 50Hz, higher than the 120V/60Hz common in the US and some other countries.

Voltage Converters: Check your devices’ labels for “100-240V, 50/60Hz.” If not dual voltage, you’ll need a step-down converter to prevent damage.

Frequency: Most modern electronics won’t be affected by the 50Hz frequency, but appliances with motors or clocks might run slower or less accurately.

Power Fluctuations: Some areas may have voltage spikes or drops, so a surge protector is a smart addition for your valuable electronics.

Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. We strongly recommend an international travel insurance policy. Please check with your insurance provider to ensure that medical expenses are also covered during your trip. Tip: make sure you’re not double-insured for healthcare through both your travel insurance and separate health insurance, as this can sometimes overlap.
What clothes should I pack?

Light clothes for the day, warm clothes for the evening (especially on safari), and respectful clothing for local villages. (verwijzing naar een Instagram post)
